The Newark American Little League senior all-stars capped their pandemic-delayed season by winning the District 2 Championship in a dramatic double-header against Naamans on Tuesday night.
Game 1 began Monday night but was postponed after the fourth inning due to rain, with Naamans leading 4-1. The game resumed Tuesday night with Naamans adding an additional run in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom half of the inning, Zack Czarnecki connected for a grand slam to tie the game, and Eddie Klima scored the go-ahead run by stealing home on a wild pitch. Steven Mann was sharp on the mound for Newark American, which ultimately won 6-5 to force a second game that night.
Game 2 began as a pitching dual, with neither team scoring until the fourth inning. Klima struck out eight batters and allowed only one hit, which gave Naamans a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Czarnecki and Hunter Harach singled, and Chase Huebner loaded the bases on a walk.
Newark American scored three runs on a bases-loaded walk, a Jordon Nietfeld hit-by-pitch and a Michael Brelek single to take a 3-1 lead. Huebner came in to pitch the final three innings and allowed only one run for a 3-2 win.
Due to the pandemic, Little League is not holding any tournaments beyond the district level this year.
