Rodney

The Rodney dorms will be demolished this fall.

The Rodney dorms will be reduced to a pile of rubble this fall, but University of Delaware alumni who are nostalgic for their days in the 1960s-era dorm now have a chance to secure a piece of history from the site.

Responding to what city officials described as “an influx” of requests for souvenir bricks from Rodney, the city’s contractor has agreed to set up a process to distribute bricks.

Those interested should email rodneysite@jmt.com and include a name, email address and phone number.

Demolition of the dorms will begin Monday and continue through November.

The work will be limited to the timeframe of 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The workers will use streams of water to keep dust down, and the city will take daily air quality samples. Access to the underpass will be maintained.

All the demolition will be done with backhoes and excavators.

Once the site is clear, the contractor will begin building a stormwater pond and park, which are slated to open in fall 2020.
