Two people with local ties – one from Newark and one from Bear – were killed in a crash in Cecil County, Md., on Monday.
The crash happened at approximately noon on U.S. 40 near Charlestown, police reported.
The driver, Ranae Maurise Grinnell, 21, of Newark, and her backseat passenger, Myasia Destiny Killian, 21, of Bear, died at the scene, police said.
A helicopter crew flew Grinnell’s front-seat passenger, Tasean Shamar Emmens-Grant, 20, of Marcus Hook, Pa., from the crash scene to University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore, where he was treated for injuries that investigators described as serious, police added.
Police said Grinnell, who was driving a Ford Focus, was attempting to cross westbound U.S. 40 from Principio Parkway and pulled into the path of a westbound tractor-trailer, police said.
The tractor-trailer crashed into the Focus, sending both vehicles into the eastbound lanes of U.S. 40, where they came to rest, police added.
