A Newark parking lot attendant suffered minor injuries Saturday evening when a truck knocked a parking booth off its foundation.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. in municipal lot #4, located off Main Street behind Walgreens and Panera Bread. As a delivery truck was leaving the lot, its tailgate caught the small metal and glass booth where the employee sits to collect money from drivers.
“As it turned and pulled away, it pushed the booth from its foundation, tearing it from many of the connections that are required for operation,” city spokesman Kevin Liedel said.
The employee inside was taken to Christiana Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
After the crash, employees lifted the parking gates, making parking free in the lot until the booth can be repaired.
“Currently, city staff are diligently working towards getting the parking booth operational,” Liedel said.
Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department, said the incident was deemed an accident and the truck driver was not charged. The driver frequently makes deliveries in the lot but on Saturday he was driving a longer truck than usual.
“It was bigger than normal, and he misjudged it,” Rubin explained.
