A man cutting down a tree in a Newark backyard was killed Monday afternoon when a piece of the tree fell on him, authorities said.
The incident happened just before 1 p.m. in the 200 block of Walker Way in the Hunt at Louviers, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
The 64-year-old man was part of a two-man team from a commercial tree service company that was cutting down a tree.
The man “was struck by a piece of the tree that fell as it was being cut and suffered fatal injuries,” Rubin said. He died at the scene.
Rubin said the incident appears to be an accident. Because it involved a workplace death, it was referred to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for further investigation.
Police did not release the name of the victim.
