Temporary road closures are planned this week for the Casho Mill Road underpass and part of Academy Street.
Casho Mill Road will be closed between Julie Lane and Thorn Lane from 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, to address “problematic potholes and deteriorating pavement,” city spokeswoman Jayme Gravell said.
This is the second time in two months the underpass has closed for pothole repairs. The first time, in August, drew complaints from motorists who expressed concern about the quality of the repairs.
“The work performed in August was a mill and overlay of the surface asphalt layer, while the current work will involve pouring full depth concrete patches in place of the existing hot mix, and installation of a full depth hot mix paving section just beyond both ends of the underpass to tie-in to the existing pavement on Casho Mill,” Gravell said.
The temporary closure is not related to the ongoing debate over CSX’s request to permanently close the underpass.
Meanwhile, Academy Street will be closed between Lovett Avenue and Courtney Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12, for construction related to water main repairs, Gravell said.
On Saturday, the work will force the disruption of water service to the campus buildings in the area, according to a University of Delaware spokesperson.
A boil-water advisory will be in effect immediately after water service is restored. Because of the advisory, UD's Scrounge food court and the Dunkin' Donuts in Perkins Student Center will be closed from Saturday through Wednesday. Water fountains in nearby campus buildings will be shut down.
