Summer is always a popular time for roadwork, and with just three weeks left before university students return, there are a number of projects scheduled around Newark this month.
South College Avenue: As part of the ongoing Main Street reconstruction project, the intersection of Main Street and South College Avenue will be closed this weekend. One lane of Main Street will remain open, but motorists will not be able to turn from Main onto South College or from South College onto Main. Officials have not given an exact duration for the closure, saying only that it will take place the weekend of Aug. 3.
Elkton Road: The left lane in both directions of Elkton Road is closed between Interchange Boulevard and the state line. The project involves utility work in preparation of a major, two-year-long widening project expected to begin in spring 2020. There will also be intermittent lane closures on Otts Chapel Road. The work will continue through Sept. 30.
West Chestnut Hill Road: The road will be closed to through-traffic between South College Avenue and Otts Chapel Road so crews can repair a bridge over the Christina Creek near Rittenhouse Park. Local traffic will be provided access during the closure. The closure will start Monday (Aug. 5) and last through Aug. 16.
Welsh Tract Road: Once West Chestnut Hill Road reopens, nearby Welsh Tract Road will have its turn to undergo bridge work. The road will be closed to through-traffic between South College Avenue and Otts Chapel Road. The project is scheduled to start Aug. 19 and last through Aug. 30, but it won’t begin until West Chestnut Hill Road reopens. Local traffic will be provided access during the closure.
Kent Way: The University of Delaware will close Kent Way next week in order to remove several trees from UD property. The exact schedule was not made public.
Main Street: As most Newarkers are well aware, the Main Street reconstruction project is continuing through June 2020. At the east end of Main Street, the right lane is closed between Washington Street and North Chapel Street. At the west end, the left lane of Main Street is closed between just west of Academy Street and the Trabant Garage.
Repaving throughout Newark: Anyone who’s driven down Delaware Avenue lately has experienced a much smoother ride thanks to a recent patching of the pothole-plagued road. Patching of other roads in the city, including South College Avenue, North College Avenue, Elkton Road and Old South Chapel Street, will continue through Aug. 9.
Galleria parking lot: Sometime in August, the parking lot behind the Main Street Galleria will close for several days to allow a city contractor to add 45 spaces to the lot. The city has yet to announce a date for the closure.
Harmony Road: East of the city, Harmony Road remains closed between Capitol Trail and Greenridge Road. The bridge project began July 29 and will last through mid-September.
