A Christiana High School student was arrested for bringing a gun to school in his backpack, police said.
The incident happened Monday morning at the school on Salem Church Road, according to Cpl. Jason Hatchell, a spokesman for Delaware State Police.
School employees smelled marijuana on the 16-year-old student from Bear and removed him from a classroom and escorted him to the office.
Administrators searched the student and his backpack and found a loaded gun and 4 grams of marijuana, Hatchell said. The school resource officer – a state trooper stationed at the school – was notified and arrested the student.
A computer check showed the gun was stolen, Hatchell said.
The student, whose name was not released, was charged with five felony gun charges as well as possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was jailed at the New Castle County youth detention center after failing to post $51,000 secured bail.
