After years of neglect, College Square Shopping Center is on the verge of a major redevelopment project to transform the aging, vacancy-plagued site into a mixed-use complex featuring retail shops, restaurants and apartments.
City council approved the project Monday, and the developer, Fusco Enterprises, hopes to have the construction done within two years, attorney Michael Hoffman said. The exact timetable has yet to be determined, and no new tenants have been disclosed.

Even with a half-empty shopping center, it’s still congested. I’m sure that it will get worse.
Walkable, bikeable ?...with that extra traffic, please.
We need roads expanded!
Does the council ever vote no to major re/development? I'd prefer not to have the added traffic on Barksdale Road.
This is so absolutely ridiculous that the council really needs to quit en masse. They are obviously corrupt. They are obviously getting kick backs from developers. They care nothing for people who reside in Newark and who have to pay taxes to Newark and try to enjoy the Newark that they liked - before this council destroyed everything. You cannot allow massive building projects like these. There are no roads for the assisted living facility - I know because I am stuck in traffic on these roads every day. There is no place for the horrible hotel that they just approved. Traffic is horrible, already, and the parking that will be lost is desperately needed. I cannot speak to the third project, as I don't live in that area, but I do know that the roads are always clogged, based on my attempts to get to the library.
I have NEVER seen traffic "backed up " on Barksdale Road. Traffic for a modest assisted living and memory care facility will be minimal and staff shift changes are not during prime commuting times.
Downtown and Library Avenue are different stories and I agree in those cases.
Actually, I was referring to the chronic back ups at the Casho bridge and at Main Street. And, the backup on the Apple bridge, whenever someone sees fit to jam their uhaul into the Casho bridge. At least, I assume that the people going to the assisted living place aren't beaming in... And, why do you assume that there won't be shift changes at commuting times? There will be staff, visitors, and supplies coming in. Add to that, the townhouses that they will surely approve (they are one a developing roll right now).
