POW/MIA memorial

ROTC cadets from the University of Delaware participate in a POW/MIA ceremony on the Academy Lawn last year.

Next week, local ROTC cadets and VFW members will gather to recognize and honor all of the men and women who were captured as prisoners of war or are missing in action.

There are currently more than 1,500 Americans missing or unaccounted for. By bringing awareness and increasing support, organizers intend to honor those who were brave enough to serve the nation.

Newarkers are invited to attend a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 on the Academy Lawn, which is part of a 24-hour vigil.

In addition to the cadets standing guard, other cadets will be running a loop downtown with a POW/MIA flag for 24 hours.

There will also be a Warrior 5K race held on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. at Lums Pond in Bear. Registration is $15. For more information or to sign up go to https://runsignup.com/Race/DE/Bear/POWMIA5K.
