Theft suspect

Police believe this woman stole credit cards at a downtown Newark restaurant and then punched a witness who confronted her.

Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman accused of stealing credit cards at a downtown Newark restaurant and then punching a witness who confronted her.

The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. Sunday as the victim was eating lunch at Caffé Gelato, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.

“While seated at the table, the victim felt her purse moving and turned to find that her credit cards were missing,” Rubin said. “As the victim stated out loud that her cards were missing, a female seated at a table behind the victim stood up and left the business.”

The victim and her friends attempted to confront the suspect and ended up chasing her down Main Street. When one of them caught up with the suspect, the suspected thief punched her in the face and fled north on Center Street, toward New Street, Rubin said.

The 19-year-old woman who was punched did not require medical attention.

The alleged thief was described as a black woman wearing a white Adidas shirt, gray pants, white shoes and a white hat. Anyone with information about the woman’s identity should contact Officer Andrew Maiura at 302-366-7100, ext. 3495, or amaiura@newark.de.us.
