A Newark man is facing numerous charges after he nearly hit state troopers with his SUV outside a Wawa, police said.
The incident happened at 12:40 a.m Dec. 7 outside the Wawa at 4651 Ogletown-Stanton Road, according to Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell, a spokesman for Delaware State Police.
Members of the Governor’s Task Force – a unit made up of state troopers and probation officers that address quality-of-life issues in high crime areas – were on patrol and noticed an SUV parked in a handicapped space without a handicapped placard, Hatchell said.
When the officers approached, the driver “sped in reverse toward a trooper,” who was able to run out of the way, Hatchell said. The driver then crashed his SUV into a police vehicle and drove toward two more troopers before finally crashing into a concrete post in front of the Wawa, Hatchell said.
Troopers were then able to arrest the driver, identified as 26-year-old Matthew Mellette.
Inside Mellette’s SUV, police found a stolen handgun, 40 grams of marijuana, 23 ecstasy pills and two fake IDs.
Mellette was charged with 17 offenses, including reckless endangerment, receiving a stolen firearm, resisting arrest with force and several drug and gun charges. He was jailed after failing to post $147,500 cash bond.
