Police ID Newark man struck, killed crossing Wilmington road

  • 0

A Newark man was struck and killed as he attempted to cross a dark road in Wilmington late Friday night, police said.

Josue Ortiz, 24, was trying to cross South Heald Street at 11:39 p.m., according to Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe, a spokeswoman for Delaware State Police.

Ortiz walked “directly into the path” of a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe, which struck him, Jaffe said. He died at the scene.

“South Heald Street is dark and has no artificial lighting in the area,” Jaffe noted.

The driver of the Tahoe, identified only as a 45-year-old man from Wilmington, was not hurt.

DSP is continuing to investigate the crash.
