Police have arrested a man accused of accelerating toward a Newark Police officer while driving drunk, authorities said.
The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. Saturday as two officers were patrolling on foot on Cleveland Avenue near Wilbur Street, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
The officers saw an eastbound car cross into the westbound lane of Cleveland Avenue in an attempt to pass traffic that was backed up.
“One of the officers stepped into the roadway in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” Rubin said. “The vehicle accelerated. and the officer was able to avoid being struck by the vehicle.”
The officers noted the vehicle’s license plate and advised other officers to be on the lookout for it.
A short time later, a Newport Police officer saw the car pulling into a driveway near Wilmington and arrested the driver after a brief struggle, Rubin said.
The driver, Kevin Jimenez, 24, of Wilmington, was drunk at the time, police alleged.
Jimenez was charged with DUI, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, disregarding a police officer’s signal and overtaking a vehicle on the left. He was released on $8,200 unsecured bail.
