The popular Parks on Draft event will return this weekend with a pop-up beer garden at Handloff Park on Barksdale Road.
The beer garden will be open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Based on a similar event series in Philadelphia, the Newark Parks and Recreation Department’s Parks on Draft initiative is intended to capitalize on the trend of outdoor beer gardens, bring new people to town, support businesses during the traditionally slow summer season, raise money for charity and highlight the city’s various parks. The city partners with various restaurants for the event series.
This weekend’s restaurant partner is Home Grown Cafe, which will sell a variety of alcoholic beverages as well as salads, fish or chicken tacos, hot dogs, hamburgers, boardwalk fries, crab fondue, hummus and spinach spread.
There will also be merchant booths from National 5&10, Rainbow Records, Newark Bike Project and Brewer’s Hideaway Farm, as well as entertainment each day.
On Friday, Rainbow Records will provide a DJ, and there will be activities for kids, including a train ride.
On Saturday, the Ryan Bacher Band will perform. On Sunday, Khayden Arts will perform, and attendees are invited to bring their dogs for “yappy hour.” Pet rescue organizations will have a booth to show off pets available for adoption.
All three days will feature Yoga in the Park, with a one-hour class for $10 at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
The family-friendly event features free parking at Handloff Park and Leroy Hill Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to sit on. Admission is free.
Parks and Rec officials hope to hold more Parks on Draft events throughout the summer, but details have not yet been finalized.
