Dozens of Newarkers came together Sunday to collect pet food and supplies for two local shelters.
The effort was organized by Erica Huss, who promoted the collection drive on social media and spent four hours manning a drop-off location at Handloff Park.
More than 50 people stopped by to drop off supplies. Huss planned to split the six carloads of items between Delaware SPCA and Faithful Friends.
“It was definitely a big outpouring of love,” she said.
Huss said that early on in the pandemic, she sought help from a local shelter’s pet food bank and realized the organization was having trouble keeping up with demand. A neighbor stepped up to help her instead.
“I was blessed with some cat food and cat litter from one of my neighbors,” she said. “I thought it was time to pay it forward.”
