Officials are encouraging Newarkers to show off their creativity by decorating their home and yard for the first two weeks of July.
The Newark Parks and Recreation Department will produce a map of all the decorated houses and publish it as a self-guided tour for spectators to enjoy.
The tour is intended as a replacement for the city’s annual Independence Day festival and fireworks show, which was canceled due to the pandemic. It also coincides with National Parks and Recreation Month.
Those interested in participating should have their houses decorated by July 1 and leave the decorations up through July 13. To be included on the map, houses should be registered at www.newarkde.gov/play.
Decorations can include lights and/or decorations for daytime viewing.
“Santa in a hula skirt? Christmas in July? Patriotic theme? Sure! Anything is possible so long as it keeps with our family friendly theme,” the parks and recreation department wrote in an announcement of the tour.
The department is also asking residents to share their favorite picnic recipes on the department’s Facebook page.
