The Newark Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving purported calls from a detective demanding money.
During the calls, the scammer tells recipients there is a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear in court and instructs them to send payment via prepaid money card to avoid arrest.
“Residents who receive such a call are advised to promptly hang-up,” NPD spokesman Lt. Andrew Rubin said. “The Newark Police will not ask someone to handle a warrant over the phone via prepaid money card.”
He added that the scam is well known to the Federal Trade Commission and urged residents to report scam calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
