A 43-year-old Newark man was struck and killed as he attempted to cross a highway near Brookside late Tuesday night, police said.
The crash happened just before 11 p.m. near the intersection of Chestnut Hill Road and Old Newark Road, according to Senior Cpl. Heather Pepper, a spokeswoman for Delaware State Police.
The pedestrian was trying to cross Chestnut Hill Road as a 31-year-old man was driving a Hyundai Sonata west in the left lane.
“The pedestrian entered the roadway directly into the path of the Sonata,” Pepper said. “The vehicle attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to the right, but was unable to avoid striking with the pedestrian. The pedestrian was not crossing at a marked crosswalk, which one was located east of the collision scene.”
The pedestrian, whose name was not released, was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he died.
The driver was not hurt. Pepper said police are continuing to investigate the crash.
