Residents of Millcroft Senior Living in Newark are asking for the public’s help to collect supplies to send to hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.
“The residents were talking about how tragic it is, after seeing so much stuff on the news, and how they wish they could help,” said Nicole Stewart, a Millcroft employee who helped organize the effort.
Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans earlier this month as a Category 4 storm, causing major flooding and decimating the power grid.
Newarkers are encouraged to drop off supplies at Millcroft, 225 Possum Park Road, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Suggested items include non-perishable food, clothing, baby wipes, formula, diapers, blankets and hygiene products. Cash donations will also be accepted.
Donors are asked to wear a mask when dropping off supplies.
Stewart is working with the American Red Cross to distribute the donations.
Residents of Millcroft are excited about the event, she said.
“They’ve been going through so much themselves, between the COVID isolation and everything like that,” Stewart said. “They all hit an emotional wall for a while, and it’s nice to see them look forward to doing something for somebody else, coming up with the ideas and getting excited about something.”
