Newark Police are asking for the public’s help locating a man wanted for a previously undisclosed assault that happened in November.

Herbert “Chip” Wesley, 53, of Middletown, is facing charges of second-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.

The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. Nov. 6 in the parking lot of the Villa Belmont condominiums on Welsh Tract Road. The victim told police Wesley hit him in the head with a hard object, said Rubin, who noted that officers found a “weapon similar to a baton” at the scene.

The victim knew Wesley but said the attack was unprovoked, according to Rubin.

Police got an arrest warrant for Wesley on Nov. 11 but did not publicly disclose the incident until Jan. 7, when Rubin publicized Wesley’s photo and asked for tips about his location.

Wesley was described as a black man, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 150 pounds.

Anyone with information about Wesley’s location should contact Officer Alessandro Iommelli at 302-366-7100, ext. 3587, or
