The Sunoco gas station on South Main Street was robbed June 23 by a man carrying a hammer.

Police are searching for a man who robbed a Newark gas station while armed with a hammer.

The robbery happened at 11:44 a.m. Sunday at the Sunoco station on South Main Street, next to the Park N Shop.

Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department, said the robber approached the sales counter and demanded money while threatening a clerk with the hammer.

The robber went behind the counter and grabbed cash before running out of the store.

The robber was described as a white man, 20 to 30 years old, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, with an average build. He was wearing a light-colored jacket and black shorts.

No surveillance footage was released.
