The fast-casual hamburger chain Five Guys is coming to Newark’s Main Street.
The eatery will open at 137 E. Main St., the metallic diner at the corner of Main and Haines Street.
It is slated to open in mid to late August, company spokeswoman Jessica Lloyd said.
Five Guys is known for its simplistic menu consisting mainly of fresh, never-frozen burgers with a variety of toppings. It also sells French fries, milkshakes and hot dogs.
The chain was founded in Arlington, Va., in 1986 and now has more than 1,700 locations worldwide, including Christiana Mall, Prices Corner, Lantana Square and Governor’s Square. The Main Street location will be the company’s first in Newark.
Here in Newark, it will compete with M20 Burgers, a Philadelphia-based chain that opened at 42 E. Main St. last fall.
The building that Five Guys has leased was last home to Cheeburger Cheeburger, which closed during the pandemic after nearly 10 years on Main Street. Prior to that, it was a diner known by several names over the years, including Newark Diner, Jimmy’s Diner, Jude’s Diner and Korner Diner.
