Attendees of Wednesday’s Main Street Alfresco outdoor dining event will be able to get a COVID-19 vaccine before grabbing dinner or a drink on Main Street.
And, as an added incentive, the first 50 people who get vaccinated during the event will receive a free gift card to Grotto Pizza.
"We couldn't be more excited to be one of the first cities in Delaware to bring the COVID-19 vaccine to our residents that may have transportation or other challenges,” Mayor Jerry Clifton said. "We're grateful for the collaborative effort with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency and Division of Public Health to help bring us one step closer to returning to life as we knew it pre-pandemic."
Free Johnson & Johnson vaccines – which require only one dose – will be provided in a tent set up at the west end of Main Street, between Grotto’s and Dunkin’, Newark spokeswoman Jayme Gravell said. Appointments can be made in advance here, and walk-ups are also welcome.
A total of 250 vaccines will be available. The gift cards will be provided by the state, Gravell said.
Main Street Alfresco runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Main Street will be closed between Chapel Street and South College Avenue in order to provide restaurants and retailers an expanded outdoor seating area to accommodate increased capacity while still observing coronavirus safety protocols. Parking is available in municipal lots and various private downtown lots, but normal parking fees apply.
Another Alfresco night is scheduled for May 26. After that, the city hopes to hold one every Wednesday from June through September, City Manager Tom Coleman announced Monday night.
