A man who tossed away a loaded handgun while fleeing from police in Newark is facing charges, authorities said.
The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn on South College Avenue, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
An officer patrolling the parking lot spotted a group of five men who appeared to be smoking marijuana and ordered them to stop, Rubin said.
Most of the men fled into the motel, but one took off running across Old Cooch’s Bridge Road, and an officer gave chase.
The man, later identified as Philip Harris-Randolph, 20, of Smyrna, discarded a handgun while fleeing and was eventually apprehended in the backyard of a home in the 1100 block of Old Cooch’s Bridge Road, Rubin said.
Harris-Randolph was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, tampering with physical evidence, resisting arrest and trespassing. He was released on $25,000 unsecured bond.
