Brunch chain First Watch is coming to Newark, joining a growing roster of new businesses in The Grove at Newark, formerly called College Square Shopping Center.
City council on Monday unanimously granted the restaurant a special-use permit to sell alcohol.
First Watch, which sells breakfast, brunch and lunch items, will be located in a new building that is under construction roughly where the former Pep Boys was. It will be joined in that building by a national brand coffee shop and a third, yet-to-be-announced tenant.
The eatery will include 132 seats indoors, another 42 seats on a covered outdoor patio and an indoor and outdoor bar.
It will serve a variety of foods, including omelettes, pancakes, waffles, eggs Benedict, breakfast tacos, biscuits and gravy, grain bowls, frittatas, sandwiches, salads and soups. The bar menu includes bloody Marys, mimosas, beer and cocktails.
The Florida-based chain has more than 440 locations in 28 states, including one on Churchmans Road east of Newark and one on Del. 141 near Wilmington.
First Watch will be part of a major redevelopment project that is taking place in The Grove.
Raising Cane’s, a fast-food chicken eatery is expected to open within the next few weeks. Del Pez Mexican Gastropub, which previously had a Main Street location and is currently located at the Wilmington Riverfront, is also planning to open a new location in the shopping center.
Also planned is a NovaCare Rehabilitation clinic as well as a fast-casual Mexican restaurant and a fast-casual Middle Eastern restaurant.
Three new businesses – Jersey Mike’s Subs, Bonchon Korean Fried Chicken and Leslie’s Pool Supplies – opened last year. At least a dozen more tenants are expected in the coming years, though no announcements have been made.
The redevelopment project also includes a 306-unit luxury apartment complex called Compass at The Grove, which began leasing last year.
