A missing child case had a happy – and quick – ending Monday afternoon after police found the boy wandering near a busy Newark intersection and were able to track down the parents.
The child, believed to be between 6 and 9 years old, has autism and is non-verbal, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
A police officer found the boy near the intersection of South Main Street and Apple Road, near the police station, around 5:15 p.m. Monday. He was not wearing any clothing.
Police released a photo of the boy and asked for the public’s help locating his parents. Within minutes, the boy’s mother saw the photo on social media and contacted police, Rubin said.
“She didn’t know he was missing,” Rubin said. “He just walked out the door.”
The family lives just a few blocks away on Beverly Road.
The boy appeared to be in good condition. No criminal charges are expected, Rubin said.
