A Newark-area apartment complex has reached a settlement with the Delaware Department of Justice to resolve a fair housing complaint, a DOJ spokesperson said.
The Vinings at Christiana on Old Baltimore Pike and its management company, Capreit Residential Management LLC., was accused of failing to correctly follow the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Residential Selection Plan and wrongfully denying an applicant who held a State Rental Assistance Program Voucher on grounds of insufficient income.
The alleged unlawful discriminatory housing practice left a woman and three children homeless, officials said.
The company did not admit fault but agreed to pay the woman $20,000, complete fair housing training and update its public-facing advertising material and fair housing policies.
“Housing and reasonable accommodation are basic human rights, and that should be especially true in a place that prides itself on being a state of neighbors,” Attorney General Kathy Jennings said in a prepared statement. “There is no room for discrimination and dereliction of duty in this arena – especially when it leaves people or families homeless.”
