Local and state dignitaries toasted the newly completed Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail Monday as a premiere hiking and biking destination that will set a recreational standard throughout the region. Gov. Jack Markell, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, Newark Mayor Vance Funk, dozens of bicycling enthusiasts and even children from a nearby daycare center came out to celebrate the grand opening of the 2-mile walking and biking trail, which extends along the old Pomeroy and Newark Rail Line and north into White Clay Creek State Park. The $4.7 million trail has been 10 years in the making, said Newark Parks and Recreation Director Charles Emerson, who has overseen the project from its outset. It involved acquiring land rights, and clearing and paving the tracks to a former rail line that was abandoned in the 1920s. – PHOTOS BY KATY BOWMAN
