Pet adoption event: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Bob Carpenter Center, 631 S. College Ave. More than 1,000 dogs and cats will be available for adoption for a $35 fee.
Cultural heritage celebration: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark, 420 Willa Road. Food, music, dances and performances will highlight several international cultures. Free.
Planning commission meeting: Tuesday, 7 p.m., at city hall, 220 S. Main St. The planning commission will vote on a proposal for four townhouse-style apartments on North Street and a duplex on Valley Road.
Some Gave All 5K: Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., at the corner of Orchard Road and Amstel Avenue. The 5K run/walk will honor Sgt. Christopher Slutman, the U.S. Marine and FDNY firefighter who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this year. He and his wife, Shannon, were avid runners. All proceeds from the event will benefit Slutman’s family. Registration is $25 at fusionracetiming.com.
Concert series: Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., at White Clay Creek State Park’s Carpenter Recreation Area, 880 New London Road. John Clark’s Little Big Band will perform as part of the park's weekly summer concert series. Free, but park fees apply.
Independence Day celebration: Thursday, 6 p.m., at the University of Delaware athletic complex. Food and craft vendors will be set up in front of Delaware Stadium, and two local bands will entertain the crowd. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. Parking is free at the athletic complex lots, the STAR Campus and the UD woods lot off East Chestnut Hill Road. Free and open to the public.
