Out of the Attic: Downes Elementary School crossing guard - 1987

This week’s Out of the Attic item is a 1987 photo of children crossing the road in front of Downes Elementary School. It depicts crossing guard Nancy Toulson stopping traffic for students Patrick Greenplate and Kevin Hudson.

The photo was published in the Sept. 9, 1987, edition of the Newark Post, accompanying a profile of Toulson, who was marking her 20th year on the job.

“I promise to learn the names of all my kids by the end of the school year, and I do,” she told the Post. “I’ve never found a child that I didn’t like or didn’t care about.”

Out of the Attic is produced in partnership with the Newark Historical Society. The Newark History Museum, located in the old train station under the South College Avenue bridge is open by appointment December through March. Admission is free.
