The sixth annual 5K Run and Romp (walk) to benefit Special Olympics Delaware is Friday, December 2. Race time is 7:00 p.m., with walkers beginning shortly after the start of the race.

A unique feature of the event, which is held in conjunction with the City of Newark’s Winterfest, is that it takes place along a luminary-lit course lined with festive entertainment and fun activities along the way.
The course starts and ends on Academy Street near the Delaware Avenue intersection and proceeds south, winding along several streets to the James Hall trail before heading back up Academy Street to the finish line.
The entry fee for runners and walkers is $20 for pre-registered participants, $25 day-of, and includes a long-sleeve event T-shirt, discount coupons for Main Street merchants and post-event refreshments.
“Because of the uniqueness of this event it attracts people from all over the area,” said Lisa Smith, director of special events for Special Olympics Delaware. “Whether you are a serious runner or just want to bring the family to downtown Newark for Winterfest, participating in the Reindeer Run and Romp is the perfect way to give back to the community during the holiday season.”
Last year’s event had over 800 participants raise over $30,000 for Special Olympics Delaware.
